Plagiarism Checker

by Grammarly

  ‘Plagiarism checker’ by Grammarly can evaluate whether or not users’ text contains duplicate content. This useful tool can be used for preventing accidental plagiarism in their tasks, portfolios, papers, and so on. It compares the text to over 16 billion web pages and academic papers stored in ProQuest’s databases. When part of the text matches something written online or in a database, users will get a plagiarism alert. Also, it highlights passages that require citations and gives them the resources they need to properly credit their sources. It can calculate an overall originality score for users’ documents and offers advanced writing feedback and corrections across several dimensions. Based on these features, users can prevent accidental plagiarism in their materials.

  There are some advantages and disadvantages to this website. Grammarly’s online plagiarism checker can help them ensure that they have properly identified and cited anything in the text that isn’t 100 percent original. Plus, it offers help for 7,000+ citation styles including APA 6; therefore, students who are writing an essay, or a writer working on original content for the web, it can not only save the time but also help them avoid writing mistakes. In other words, it helps them prevent serious consequences such as failing grade, academic probation, or worse.

  However, sometimes it can not detects plagiarism in paragraphs where the sentence structure is changed, synonyms are used, extra words are inserted or text from multiple sources is combined. In this case, the evaluation score of the ‘plagiarism checker’ can become incorrect information if these parts are not reflected in the plagiarism evaluation. In other words, this tool cannot become complete prevention of accidental plagiarism. Secondly, because of the advantages(convenience) of the ‘plagiarism checker’ such as giving citation format for users, students who need to learn some citation style(APA, MLA, and so on) tend to become 'students who are not struggling to find the better ways to cite or quote some sentences'. This situation may reduce the opportunities for them to understand what kind of citation is needed and how to quote the person who originally said.

<Reflection>

  The more I thought about technology for assessment, the more I found that it has disadvantages of the computer-based system which the computer cannot make a perfect judgment. At the same time, I felt that I need to take the time for quiet reflection and careful self-assessment even if I get some help from the website for assessment. Because entirely relying on technology can result in unexpected mistakes!
 Indeed, I did not have much knowledge of websites and applications for evaluation because I usually had more positions to be assessed. I just hoped that there would be many technologies that could measure students' abilities through various evaluation methods besides scores. Through this task, I thought I should take this opportunity to find out more about the evaluation websites, applications, and software that can effectively help learners.
